General Information- This beautiful community of eucalyptus trees and hiking trails surrounds Miramar Lake and is immediately east of Mira Mesa. Scripps Miramar Ranch is one of two communities that make up the Scripps Ranch Community which was established in the 1890's and continues to proudly maintain its community motto, "Scripps Ranch - Country Living." Scripps Ranch is also home to some of the City's most scenic parks, beautiful community facilities, landscaped neighborhoods and business centers.
Today, the community, located east of I-15, is a tree-lined collection of broad streets lined with middle and upper middle-class homes.
Much of the open area is set aside for recreation and as nature preserves.
The area attracts young families because of its small town ambiance, and its excellent schools. Soccer is a popular sport. The area surrounds Miramar Lake which offers hiking trails and fishing.
The Scripps Ranch Business Park houses large companies like Geico and smaller product and service-oriented companies. It provides employment to local residents. Shopping and other services are centrally located. There are numerous activities for residents of all ages.
History of Scripps Ranch
Scripps Ranch owes its existence to its resemblance to Algeria. Newspaper magnate E.W. Scripps happened on the area in 1890 and recognized the similarity of its climate and foliage to Algeria--the only place he felt he could be free of the colds that he often suffered. He and his half-sister, Ellen Browning Scripps, bought 400 acres on the mesa and eventually expanded their holdings to 2,100 acres.
Scripps began building the home he called Miramar and completed construction of the adobe wing in 1898. He named the house for Archduke Maximillian's castle in Trieste, Italy and patterned it after the architecture of North Africa. It became his permanent home until 1917.
