History of Eastlake

The historical information about the city known as Chula Vista, can be linked back for millions of years by examination of land and sea fossils. In 3000 B.C.,  individuals speaking Yuman began moving into the region. Various Native American Indians in San Diego presently are ancestors of the Kumeyaay tribe.

In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo lead a fleet of three minute ships into the San Diego Harbor. These voyages led the

Spanish to claim the land. In 1795, Chula Vista developed into part of a Spanish land grant.  This grant was known as Rancho del Rey or "The King's Ranch." When Mexico created its individual government in 1831, Rancho del Rey became known as Rancho del la Nation or National Ranch. The ranch surrounded the cities presently known as National City, Bonita, Chula Vista, Sunnyside, and the Sweetwater Valley.
 Rancho del la Nation was utilized by the Spanish as land for their cattle and horses.  In 1845, this land was given to the son-in-law of Mexican governor Pio Pico, John Forster.

The US claimed the state of California after the Mexican-American war in 1847. Although California became a state in 1850, land grants were permitted to continue as private possession under the rights of the American law.
